Good weekend, letter

Dear Sarah,

It's just a note to say thank you for the lovely day yesterday. It was really hard to get back to work today after such a relaxing time. Delicious food, good company, a beautiful garden. The kids had a great time too, and are still talking about the dog and the pool. It was especially nice to meet your parents after hearing about them for so long; they really are just as I imagined them.
Would you like to come over to us next weekend? You could come for lunch on Saturday or Sunday, and we could go for a walk in the hills afterwards if the weather is good. Please bring your parents if they are still staying with you. It would be lovely to see them again.
Hoping to see you next weekend, and with thanks again for yesterday.

Love,
Stefi

LYRICS

Standing in line to
see the show tonight
and there's a light on
heavy glow
by the way I tried to say
I'd be there waiting for
Dani the girl is
singing songs to me
beneath the marquee overload

steak knife card shark
con job boot cut
Skin that flick
she's such a little DJ
to get there quick
by street but not the reeway
turn that trick
to make a little leeway
beat that nic
but not the way that we play

dogtown blood bath
rib cage soft tal

Standing in line
see the show tonight
and there's a light on
heavy glow
by the way I tried to say
I'd be there waiting for

black jack dope dick
pawn shop quick pick
kiss that dyke
I know you want to hold one not on strike
but I'm about to bowl one
bite that mic
I know you never stole one
girls that like a story, so I told one

song bird main line
cash back hard top

INFORMAL LETTER

5 April, 2010
Ak410 Street
7,56800 London

Dear Kate,

I'm just writing to tell you that yesterday I found some photos of our childhood; of you, Jamie and me, when I lived in Britain. I'm wondering how it's possible that our friendship didn't change in these years, and I'm so happy for that.

Eight years have passed and although we're so far, I've got a feeling that I'll return without changes to London and everything will be the same and Jamie too. By the way, how is he? I hope that he is ok! Do you remember when we went to play jokes? And do you remember how much we laughed togheter?
I can remember every moment we've spent in detail, even the face that Jamie had that day when his mother caught him red-handed while he had been doing one of our mischiefs.

Now I have got a lot of friends and I'm so happy here in Spain, but sometimes I miss a little bit London and my life there.

Well, as I has told you before, this summer I'm going to London to spend my holidays and I really want to get there!
I hope this letter arrives before me.

Love, ♥
Stefy

Two-year-old who smokes 40 cigarettes a day

Taking a deep drag on his cigarette while resting on the steering wheel of his truck, he looks like a parody of a middle-aged lorry driver.
But the image covers up a much more disturbing truth: At just the tender age of two, Ardi Rizal's health has been so ruined by his 40-a-day habit that he now struggles to move by himself.
The four-stone Indonesia toddler is certainly far too unfit to run around with other children - and his condition is  set to rapidly deteriorate.

FALSE FRIENDS

There are several words in Spanish that are similar in English, but have a different meaning. Here are a few examples:

  • actually is similar to Spanish actualment; however, actualment is better translated with e.g. currently, as actually actually means in reality.
  • embarrassed is not the same as embarassada. A translation for embarrassed could be apenat. In some situations it can be embarrassing to be embarassada, for example pregnant!
  • realize should not be confused with Spanish realitzar. When Mexican students use the English word realize, they normally use it meaning to say something like: to give an idea physical form. They mostly don't realize that realize also means that you become aware of something.
  • approve is sometimes confused with aprovar:"Teacher, did I approve the exam?" aprovar means pass as in 'pass an exam', whereas approve means to agree to something.
  • Students often use the word career to refer to their studies (Spanish carrera):"When I finish my career, I want to go to United States (sic)". Career, refers to professional work. When you finish your career you'll be an old person!
  • lecture is not the same as lectura. A lecture is a talk about a particular topic. A translation for lectura could be reading or simply text.
  • apartment in Spanish is departament; department is also  departamento (in spanish). Therefore it is understandable that speakers of Spanish frequently use department when referring to an apartment.
  • Spanish speakers often confuse by and for in passive voice. The reason is that they use per and that looks and sounds like for.
  • another 'false friend' is try with Spanish tratar, as in this sentence:"the movies tries with the problems of a strange man," or:"in business, you have to try with people." Again, the confusion is understandable. In Spanish you would use tratar in both cases; however, in English you might consider using is about and deal with respectively.
  • Speakers of Spanish also tend to confuse win with guanyar. Teachers frequently read or here things like:"They win a lot of money," instead of "They make/earn a lot of money." You win money in the lottery. Making or earning money refers to your salary/ income.
Now that we're talking about win, we should also mention the difference between win and beat. Here's how they should be used:
América beat Guadalajara 9-0! (beat the opponent)
América won the game (win the game)
  • Politics/ Politician: When referring to the authorities, speakers of Spanish normally confuse Spanish politico(s) with English politics. A politician is a person who has a job in politics. Politician = politico. Politics refer to, say, the regulation of a country.
  • Compromise and compromís aren't equivalents either. Compromís should be translated with commitment. Compromise refers to making concessions to come to an agreement, a settlement.
  • Parents only refers to your father and mother.
parientes, on the other hand, refers to your extended family, cousins, uncles, aunts etc. Therefore, parientes is relatives in English.
I think it's bizarre that words so similar in two idioms are very different, another word that I have learn is molest, whose mean it's very different of molestar. Molest is a sexual agression, and molestar is to annoy. But by the time, you can to assimilate all this words, and many more.

Concerts represent 87% of the Catalan music industry business

Live music has turned out to be the motor of the Catalan music industry, according to the Annual Conclusion of Music and Entertainment by the Group Enderrock. Last year the promoters and concert halls of Catalonia have collected seven times more money than the record labels. With a billing of about 150 millions of euros in 2008, the companies that have dedicated themselves to live music concentrate 87% of the business volume of music in Catalonia. According to Joan Roselló, president of the Association of Representatives, Promoters and Managers of Catalonia (ARC), 13 million people have been attending the 22.000 concerts last year, an amount that beats the audience of Barça, Español, the theater and dance altogehter.
I agree with the opinion of some people that the reason for this may be that the recording industry is overly cautious about investing in Catalan language artists due to a perceived risk. This means that concerts are one of the few and possibly only outlets that many Catalan artists have to share their music.

WE HAVE TO RESPECT OUR WORLD

At present, humans have got the whole control of the world. We are the strongest species of animal that there's. But controling the world requires a big responsibility. We can't live in a world that we are hurting all the time.
Nowadays, there are a lot of economic interests, and the governments act as if there's no problem, as if nothing happens. Even so now, there are some organizations which are worried about this issue, and they take care of the planet's protection.
I think that we don't see how much we are against the world, although without our knowing. And we don't know that we are self destructive, because if we don't look after our planet, which is our home, the likfe in it will become extinct, and humans too.
Some people would think that the most important think now is to be successful, and develop more new technology. But they don't see realize technology and our desire to control everything will be to blame.
On the other hand, society is increasingly more consious of that, and it's an important issue in today's world, and we can't do it if we don't learn this since childhood. If we teach his since infancy, there may be a day when all the people will have above all the world's respect, and the governments will think about nature, and not only the economic interests.
In my opinion it's a bit difficult to do it (that all the world looks after nature), because there will always be some interests which are incompatible with the respect nature.
